How Do You Care For Your Skin After A Mole Removal Procedure?
There are several different mole removal techniques and procedures and which one you choose will in part depend on the size and location of the mole. Generally, when considering the options, a dermatologist will take into consideration any cosmetic concerns you have as well as choosing the right procedure for the type of mole. If the mole is large, your doctor may recommend surgical incision and removal of the mole. This type of procedure is usually the more costly and there is a possibility of slight scarring afterward. Naturally, caring for the wound and your skin after this type of a procedure is a little more complex than if the mole was removed with a laser or burned off. For small moles it is often quite possible to perform the mole removal at home by using a mole removal cream.
If you choose to use a cream, in effect the cream will simply dry up the mole until it falls off. You usually do not need to use any special skin care cream afterwards, unless there is any redness or itching. If any develops, you may need to rub moisturizing cream over the affected area until it clears up.
You will not need any special treatment if laser is used either, although you may need to apply extra moisturizing cream to the area until there is no sign of redness or irritation. As it is not an invasive procedure you should not have problems with the area becoming infected. Laser mole removal is not always that effective, however, as the laser is not able to penetrate deeper skin levels.
If your doctor removed the mole with a scalpel you will probably have stitches after the procedure. If you do, you will need to apply an antibiotic cream to the area and keep it covered with a sterile bandage until the stitches are either removed or they dissolve. Your doctor should be able to answer any random questions you have regarding the proper care.
If the mole was removed without having any incision made, for example in some instances it is sufficient to simply shave the top of the mole off, you will still need to apply antibiotic cream and keep it covered until a scab forms over the area and then later naturally falls off.
Any medicated or antibacterial creams used after the procedure should be covered by the basic mole removal cost. The procedure may even be covered by health insurance, unless it was done strictly for cosmetic purposes only.
