What Are The Best Meditation Chairs?
There is no clear answer to the questions about what the best meditation chairs are since it depends on your specific needs, but I’ll try to give you a general idea about some of the different options, what they offer and hopefully answer most random questions you might have. Traditionally meditation was done in full lotus on a cushion on the floor in the monasteries, but since meditation for beginners has become popular it is performed by people at any age from all layers of society. The new needs of “normal” people who meditate created a market and many meditation chairs have been developed specifically to help you increase comfort and support of the lower back, the spinal cord and knees.
Traditional meditation stool (also known as a meditation bench)
A meditation stool is a very simple piece of furniture and it was developed in the monasteries for those that were unable to sit in full lotus. It is used as shown on the picture above and the seat usually slopes a little to increase comfort and support lower back and knees. It’s not super comfortable, but a cheap alternative at about the same price range as meditation books and a solution if you are unable to sit in full lotus.
Rattan meditation chair
When it comes to the more comfortable designs there are two available types. The Rattan meditation chair is the most popular item on the market at this moment and cost $299. An alternative to check out is the slightly cheaper and similar looking Ecopod meditation chair. They are both designed to give maximum support and comfort while meditating in the traditional lotus posture.
Seagrass meditation chair
The most popular pick in the other category is the Seagrass meditation chair at $269. The alternative in this category is the luxurious Rama Warrior meditation chair at $399. These chairs are designed as regular chairs, but with a larger seat and lower legs to provide plenty of space for your meditation posture and be closer to the ground.
Regular armchair
This is the meditation chair I use. It’s a regular armchair that I got in IKEA for $89 and it’s standing in my living room anyway. It doesn’t have the fancy features of the other options presented here, but it’s comfortable and I really like it. A regular chair is another option and unless you have meditated on a regular basis for a while I wouldn’t recommend getting a specific chair for meditation, but spend your money on meditation software or a meditation CD instead.
As you can see there are many options available when it comes to meditation chairs and the right choice depends on your specific needs and budget. They all increase comfort and support to some degree, but at least in theory you could do with a meditation cushion on the floor, but from experience I know that’s not an option for everyone and there is no way I’m ever getting into a full lotus.
